Since the lichen was gathered at a Forest Court event, it seemed only fitting to dye the yarn at a forest court event. I did a small test batch before bringing the full warp into the picture and was content with the results.
This is the test skein. I soaked the yarn with a drop of dishwashing soap to ensure full saturation. Then brought the dye bath to simmer and added the yarn. I couldn't see much change, so I added iron mordant. The results was lovely. It cooked for about an hour. I pulled it out, did a quick rinse and almost all the color rinsed away, so I put it back in the bath and cooked again for 3 more hours (truly I set it then forgot to check back in). The second round gave a much better result. Here is the yarn being cooked over an open fire at Otzi's Paradise at the end of February. This is just after the iron mordant was added.
As with my test batch, when I did my first rinse I found I wanted more color so I cooked it again the next day.
Here is the yarn being rinsed.
