Weave faster, Otzi's Paradise is coming!

Things have been a little hectic in my mundane life lately. I broke a bone in my right foot Thanksgiving weekend and that threw most of my crafting projects into time out. I did a lot of planning and a lot of loom maintenance (Clarice is still out of commission until I can find better cording).

I have several Large weaving projects on the horizon. One is a blanket inspired by that precious piece- the Falkirk tartan. I need to contact the museum for some additional specifics so I can explain the differences between my project and the extant. But that can wait for a moment because last weekend at Birka, a sweet soul provided a bag of free roving that inspired a project that has jumped to the front of the queue.

I have 2 BIG cones of pencil roving and I immediately thought of thrummed mittens (I cast those on today). After thinking for a few minutes, I remembered the shaggy cloaks I had seen connected to some "Viking" finds. It didn't take me long to identify those cloaks as Vararfeldur and start plotting. When I sourced wool for that giant blanket, I also grabbed a bag of heavy worsted weight, 3 ply wool. The yarn is 2 plies white, one ply brown. It's absolutely soft and squishy and I had no idea what I was going to use it for, but it was 30% off and when you bought a whole bag (10 skeins) they took another 10% off. Turned out to be an incredibly intelligent decision.

Here is the set up: 8epi, 36" wide = 288 ends, 120" long warp. It works out to be just under 5 skeins of this yarn. I'm working with Sheila, a 4 harness, 6 treadle floor loom. This will be another 2x2 straight draft twill. It's good practice for using the Icelandic ram fleece for a more fine piece!

I will update this with source links over the next few days. But it's shaping up beautifully!!
