Cochineal Quest Continued

So I was asked to participate in the spring display and decided it was time to weave that cochineal wrap. Unfortunately I was unable to write anything up to submit before the deadline.  This isn't a piece I am super inspired by and thus I wasn't motivated to send it in. I have participated in almost all of the online displays since I got involved in the SCA so I'm a little sad about this. 

I settled on a herringbone twill - as I often do because it was super common during the time period my persona would have existed, and because I think it's pretty. 


This herringbone draft is not as dramatic as I often work with. It is a point draft- which means that the threading order stops and reverses mid repeat something like (1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4*2-1-4-3-2-1-3-4). It is also still a 2x2 twill - producible on a warp weighted loom or counter balance loom because there isn't a time in the pattern where the yarn has to pass over 3 threads (regardless of warp or weft). I usually weave an 8 or 12 thread herringbone twill - this one was only a 6 thread and I picked it because the draft pattern in the book looked like braids. Mine does not. I can still see the herringbone style, but it is very condensed/truncated.


It took a while to plan the overall scale for this one - I had wanted a ruana, but realized I have a ruana that I never wear!


The palest pink that I used as stripes between my experimental dyes was achieved with the discharge water. And I'm sad to say I lost even more color when I soaked the piece to "wet finish" it off the loom. 


I still need to remove my header and footer yarn, then tie fringe. It's close to being wearable. I probably won't ever wear it because it just isn't in my color palate. If I had used black or natural dark brown for the weft, I suspect it would have been much more in my wheelhouse.
